Social and Emotional Wellbeing

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have among the poorest social and emotional wellbeing outcomes of any group in Australia. While there are many factors that contribute to these outcomes, research shows that a good start in life is critical to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children’s later social and emotional wellbeing.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children are more likely to experience a range of stressors than other children. These include family violence, poverty, poor housing and overcrowding, racism and discrimination. These stressors can have a profound impact on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children’s social and emotional wellbeing.

Research into Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander social and emotional wellbeing is critical to understanding the factors that contribute to poor outcomes, and developing strategies to address them. This research is essential to ensuring that all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children have the best possible start in life.
